2014 HOME RUN TITLE RACE IS ABOUT TO START.

IT’S LONGBALL SEASON AGAIN. TIME TO PUT UP SOME NAMES THAT MIGHT MAKE A RUN FOR THE 2014 HOME RUN TITLE.

For starters it was nice to see the league finally take a strong stand against juicing and give quite a few players 50 games off for bad behavior, and a solid 162 games off for that A0Rod dude. This should go a long ways to deep the juicers to just a few.

We all know that Sosa, McGwire and Bonds won’t be inducted to the Hall-of-Fame any time soon, but do you think their stats should be there either? Let me know who you think should be the MLB home run record holder should be.

IS IT HANK OR IS IT BARRY?

In the next few days I will be putting a list of longballers together for us to consider for this years title holder, if you have some suggestions let me know and why. At the end of March I will put my preseason offs for who will hit 60 homers and who will win the HR title. Stay tuned.

DEEP INTO THE SEASON AND DAVIS IS STILL VERY MUCH ALIVE IN HIS QUEST TO JOIN THE 60 HOMERS CLUB. IT WOULD BE VERY EXCITING TO SEE IF IT CAME DOWN TO LAST GAME OF THE SEASON.
FROSTY KENNEDY HAD 59 HOMERS GOING INTO THE LAST DAY OF THE SEASON IN 1956, HE WENT 1 FOR 4 IN THE FIRST GAME OF A DOUBLE HITTER. IN THE SECOND GAME HE HAD A SO/BB/FLY OUT/SINGLE/ AND HIT HIS 60TH HOMER ON HIS LAST AT BAT OF THE SEASON TO PUT HIM INTO THE RECORD BOOKS OF BEING ONLY THE 10TH PLAYER AT THE TIME TO EVER HIT 60 OR MORE IN A SEASON IN ORG. BASEBALL. HIS STATS ARE ON DISPLAY IN COOPERS TOWN IN THE BABE RUTH WING OF THE HALL OF FAME.

ROGER MARIS SET THE MLB MARK OF 61 IN 1961 TO BECOME THE 11 PLAYER TO DO IT AND THAT RECORD STOOD ABOUT 40 YEARS UNTIL THE JUICE IN THE ARM GANG SHOWED UP AND DID IT FIVE TIMES IN JUST A FEW YEARS. I WAS VERY GLAD TO SEE MLB TAKING THE ACTION IT DID THIS MONTH WITH THE DRUGI ES.

    C. DAVIS will need to have 32 homers before the ALL-STAR game to have any real chance of joining the 60 HOMERS CLUB this year.  Five homers in 8 games is very hard to do, but not impossible. He will have stay healthy.

Frosty Kennedy has made a list of baseball greats.

Former local player ‘Frosty’ remembered,

A baseball player with Plainview ties has made a list of baseball greats.
Forrest "Frosty" Kennedy, who played for Plainview's minor league team in the 1950s, was included on Terry Cannon's list of All-Time Southland Baseball All-Stars.

The story appears on the Los Angeles Times' Web site, www.latimes.com.

Cannon is the executive director of the Baseball Reliquary, which celebrates pioneers and trailblazers, and often emphasizes cultural contributions made by ballplayers over statistical accomplishments. Therefore, his list of all-stars includes both well-known and obscure figures.
Cannon's information on Kennedy, who was born in Los Angeles, says he "never played in the major leagues, but was considered by many to be the Babe Ruth of the minor leagues.

"He hit an astounding 60 home runs for Plainview, Texas, in the Southwestern League in 1956. No one in the majors has hit .400 since Ted Williams in 1941; Kennedy hit .410 at Riverside in the Sunset League in 1949 and .410 at Plainview in 1953.

"Kennedy had a few chances to go up to the bigs, but he opted to stay in the minors because he was making decent money and ‘in the little towns where I played, the people always wanted to buy me dinner, buy me drinks. I made out real well right where I was at.' "

California's Home Run title continders

The following three players from S. Calif. I think will have a real shot at the title if they stay healthy and get a lot of playing time ( you can't hit homers sitting on the bench.

JOSH HAMILTON- LAA
Played for Texas last year and hit a season high for himself of 43 home runs.

MATT KEMP- LAD

Led all players with 23 homers last year before being sideline with injury's, only played in 106 games. Had a career high of 39 homers in 2011.

MARK TRUMBO- LAA

Won the Pacific Coast League and the MiLB title with a career high 36 homers in 2010. Hit 29 homers in 2011 and 32 homers 2012, both 144 game seasons. Look for Mark to have a very big year in 2013.

Please let me know if you think of any other players that have a real chance of winning the Home Run title this year.

60 HOMERS CLUB MEMBERS QUICK NOTES.

THE 60 HOMERS CLUB

1 BARRY BONDS 73

2 JOE BAUMAN 72
Bauman was a minor league slugger who batted .337 and collected 337 home runs and 1057 RBI in 1019 games. First signed by the Braves, he lost four years to WWII, and held out from 1949-51. He won four HR titles in the nine years he played, but only once played above Class A. After hitting 103 HR for Artesia in 1952-53, he won the Longhorn League (Class C) triple crown by batting .400 with 72 HR and 224 RBI for the Roswell Rockets in 1954. The 72 HR and .916 slugging average he achieved that season are all-time pro records.

3 MARK MCGWIRE 70

Since he retired, McGwire has kept a low profile. His admission that he used the supplement androstenedione has led to speculation that he also took steroids. Although McGwire had repeatedly denied using illegal performance-enhancing drugs, he refused to do so under oath when he appeared before the House Government Reform Committee on March 17, 2005. As McGwire said in his opening statement, "Asking me or any other player to answer questions about who took steroids in front of television cameras will not solve the problem. If a player answers 'No,' he simply will not be believed; if he answers 'Yes,' he risks public scorn and endless government investigations." When asked if he was asserting his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself, McGwire said: "I'm not here to talk about the past. I'm here to be positive about this subject."

4 JOE HAUSER 69

He made a name for himself in the minor leagues, where he became the first player ever to hit 60 or more home runs twice in a professional career: 63 in 1930, and 69 in 1933.

5 BOB CRUES 69

In 1948, Crues went on a rampage through the dusty and windswept ballparks of the Southwest, driving in 254 runs in just 140 games, dwarfing the major league record of 191 RBI set by Hack Wilson with the Cubs in 1930. Playing for the Amarillo Gold Sox of the class C West Texas-New Mexico League, Crues drove in almost two runs per game that summer. Two! The closest anyone ever came to his total was former teammate Joe Bauman who drove in 224 one season. Tony Lazzeri, who set the old record with 222, had to play in 197 games in 1925 to reach that mark at Salt Lake City in the Pacific Coast League. As the 21st century dawned, it seemed possible that Crues' RBI record will be one of the rare ones never to be broken. Bob tied Hauser's record of 69 with two games left in the season. His try for the 70th drew a record crowd of 4,851 for a season-ending Labor Day doubleheader with Lubbock. Ironically, Secory, the umpire who might have cost him a home run in Abilene, was working behind the plate

6 SAMMY SOSA 66

7 DICK STUART 66

MARK MCGWIRE 65

SAMMY SOSA 64

8 BOB LENNON 64

Bob Lennon hit 64 home runs for the Southern Association Nashville Vols in 1954, but his most memorable homer came on April 30, 1957, when he was playing for the Chicago Cubs. "It was what I had dreamed about," he recalled in a 1993 interview. He hit it in Ebbets Field, where he had rooted for the Dodgers as a boy. It was his only major league home run.

SAMMY SOSA 63

JOE HAUSER 63

9 MOOSE CLABAUGH 62

10 KEN GUETTLER 62
Guettler, who died in 1977, played only briefly above the Texas League and never made it to the majors. He hit 330 homers in 15 seasons, but never more than five in a season after his run with the Shreveport Sports in '56.

11 ROGER MARIS 61
Career Statistics

- Set Baseball's Single Season Home Run Record (61 in 1961)

- 275 Career Home Runs

- Two-time Most Valuable Player in American League (1960 & 1961)

- Led American League in RBI's (1960 & 1961)

- Gold Glove Award Winner (1960)

- Seven World Series (1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967, 1968)

- Six World Series Home Runs

12  FROSTY KENNEDY 60

Kennedy hit 60 home runs for Plainview (Texas) of the Class B Southwestern League in 1956, accomplishing this feat in only 144 games. He hit .327 that year, with 184 RBIs and 151 runs scored.

He is also one of the few men in baseball history to hit over .400 twice. He hit .411 for Riverside of the class C sunset League in 1949, and .410 for Plainview when that city fielded a team in the West Texas-New Mexico League in 1953.

Kennedy had a 40-game hitting streak for Plainview in 1953, part of a remarkable stretch which saw him hit safely in 95 of his final 100 games that season.

13 TONY LAZZERI 60

Lazzeri was a prominent member of the 1927 Yankees' "Murderers' Row" lineup and the second baseman on five World Championship Yankee clubs. He had seven 100-RBI seasons and four times hit as many as 18 home runs. His excellent glove, driving leadership, and superior baseball instincts made him the hero of Italian-Americans, as their first superstar . He was known as "the quiet man of the Yankees." Though an epileptic, he never had an on-the-field seizure in his 12 Yankee seasons.

The Juice in the Arm gang, what to do.

OK long ball fans, just a few more weeks before some players start showing up for spring camps. The really big news is that the JUICE IN THE ARM GANG did not make the HOF.  I think that Berry, Sammy and Mark will never make membership into the Hall as long as the voting sports writers have a memory of the juicing scandal, Lance has admitted to doing the same thing and he was striped of all his titles. I believe most of America considers juicing as cheating.  Non of the three got close to the 75% of votes need for membership into the Hall of Fame, in fact non got even 40%. The newest member of the juice in the vain gang is Alex (won the HR title a few years back with 54). He can look forward to never being a member of the HOF.

The last player to make the 60 homers club before the JITV gang took over was Rodger Maris, remember the call '61 in 61', that was a 38 year span before Mark did it. The last Pro Player to hit 60 before Roger was my father Forrest Edward Kennedy (Frosty) in 1956, for 5 years he was number 10 on the 60 homers list until Maris dropped him to number 11. So from 1927 (Babe Ruth) until 1961(Maris) only 11 men had hit 60 or more homers in one season, and it was done 12 times (Joe Hauser did it twice) in a 62 year span.

Then between 1998 and 2001 it was done six times by only three men. Did we really need drug testing to know that something was up?

You can't really take a way a home run title (Sammy Sosa hit 60 three times, but never won the title) but something should be done about the stats.

I would like hear yor comments on this subject and any thoughts on what organized baseball should do, if anything on this matter.

A voice from my past. Andy Forsyth

A voice from my past.

Forrest,

I did a google search on Frosty to see if there was anything posted on him.
My dad and I were talking about baseball and his name came up.

I was saddened to hear of Frosty's passing in 1998. My Dad and he played semi-pro
baseball together in So. California and they both played on the Plainview Ponies
but at different times. I think about a year or two apart. My family and his
used to go camping and horseback riding together and we'd visit his family
on Sunday afternoons a few times a year. I knew Eddie and also Nona before
she became ill. I also got to see her again years later after she came out of
her coma. So glad to here she celebrated her 25th, probably much more by now
judging by the date of the posting you had on Google. My mom was and still is
good friends with Jan. I hope she's still doing well.

I was at Cooperstown a few years ago and made a point of finding the listing
of Frosty and his 60 homers at the Hall of Fame. It was really cool to see someone
I knew that at least had his name mentioned there. I'm a big baseball fan. I also
got to see him play a few games in semi-pro when my dad and him played together.

I hope you're able to get this.
Both my parents are still around, in 2010 they celebrated their 60th Anniversary
in So. California.

Take care, Andy Forsyth, Crofton, Maryland.

Baseball great Frosty Kennedy played with Plainview Ponies

Baseball great Frosty Kennedy played with Plainview Ponies DOUG McDONOUGH
Herald Editor Plainview Herald

Without a lick of modesty, Forrest Kennedy always considered himself the greatest professional baseball player in the history of the sport.

And “Frosty” Kennedy considered his best season to be 1956, when he hammered 60 home runs and drove in an astounding 184 runs while playing for the Plainview Ponies in the Class D Southwestern League.

In recognition of that historic feat, Kennedy is part of a display at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Kennedy, who died June 5, 1998, at the age of 72, looked back at his baseball career for a feature in the Herald on Aug. 25, 1985. Then-Editor Danny Andrews updated that story in 1992, when then-66-year-old Kennedy was operating a BMX bicycle track in Covina, Calif. Although retired, he was still living in Covina when he died six years later.

“I think I’m the greatest ballplayer ever,” he told Andrews in a telephone interview in 1985. “Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs, but never batted over .400. Ted Williams and a lot of other guys batted over .400, but never hit 60 homers. I did both.”

Pointing out that fact, Kennedy told Andrews that the personalized plates on his car read “60 HOMERS.”

A retiree from Douglass Aircraft and a lifelong fan, Kennedy in his later years held the firm conviction that half of the modern major league ballplayers couldn’t have played for the Plainview Ponies and other semi-pro and minor league teams during the 1940s and 1950s.

“It’s true, the kids don’t have the experience,” he told Andrews. “They play college ball and maybe spend a year or two in the minors, and they move up to the big leagues. There are only six guys hitting over .300 in each league.

“(Yankees great) Reggie Jackson couldn’t have played on my ball club. They just don’t have players now like Musial, Williams and DiMaggio. A guy is hitting .250 and they think he’s having a helluva year,” he said.

While he hit 60 homers for Plainview, Kennedy was quoted as claiming that he could have hit 120 homers if he had played in a well-lighted modern park.

“We only had five pitchers on the staff and they were paid to go nine innings,” Kennedy explained. “Now they think a guy’s great if he goes five.”

A first baseman, according to Baseball-Reference.com, Kennedy played for a dozen teams during his 11-year career.

Kennedy said one reason he never made it to the major leagues despite a career .342 batting average with 228 home runs, 1,083 runs batted in and 1,572 hits, was “there were too many players. In those days, the Dodgers had more players in the farm system than there are in the entire minor leagues now.”

Signed for $200 per month by former Dodger catcher Babe Hermann, as a 21-year-old he played one game in the 1947 season for Riverside, Calif., recording a hit in his single appearance at the plate. The next two years at Riverside he hit .331 and .411. In 1950, Kennedy played for three teams, Pensacola, Fla., Atlanta, Ga., and Hartford, Conn., during an injury-plagued year, playing a total of 48 games with a combined batting average of .320.

He hit .307 with Miami Beach in 1951; .339 with 25 homers at Lamesa in 1952; a league-leading .410 including a 40-game hitting streak, 225 hits, 38 home runs and 169 RBI for Plainview in 1953; played briefly for Oklahoma City and Burlington, Iowa, before hitting .372 with 35 homers and 120 RBI in 112 games for Amarillo in 1954; hit .301 with 30 homers and 122 RBI with Yuma, Ariz., in 1955; .327 with 60 homers and 184 RBI in Plainview in 1956; and finished his career in 1957 playing for Boise, Idaho, (19 games with 15 hits and one homer) and Savannah, Ga., (34 games with 28 hits and six honors).

“Grover Seitz (the Pampa manager who was to have managed the Ponies in 1957, but died in a car crash in the off-season) wanted me to come back and play, but in 1957 I signed with Savannah in the Cincinnati organization and got a new car as a bonus. I had a hernia operation and they sold me to Jacksonville, and I wound up with Boise in the Pioneer League.”

After retiring as a player, Kennedy went on to coach American Legion youth baseball for eight years.

Kennedy recalled that he and second baseman Don Stokes were sold to Oklahoma City, an AA team, after the Lamesa franchise was moved to Plainview at the start of the 1953 season, and that’s how he wound up in Plainview. He hit a league-leading .410 that season, and spent the next two seasons playing for Amarillo, Burlington, Oklahoma City and Yuma, before coming back to Plainview for his historic 1956 season.

According to Baseball-Reference.com, Kennedy pitched in only three games. He pitched in two games for Amarillo in the 1954 season and once in 1956 for Plainview. None of those assignments carried enough innings to register a win-loss decision.

According to Andrews, Kennedy was a colorful character with a proverbial chaw of tobacco, muscular build and sleeveless, tobacco-stained uniform.

As the 1956 season wound down, Plainview was well out of the Class C pennant race. The locally-owned Ponies, who did not have a working agreement with a major league team, were 75-69 and finished 17 games behind Hobbs. Also in the league were El Paso, Pampa, San Angelo, Ballinger, Carlsbad, Midland, Roswell and Clovis.

But Kennedy was flirting with history, gunning for 60 homers. Babe Ruth set the major league record in 1927 for the Yankees. Joe Baumann held the overall record with 72 homers while playing for Roswell in 1954.

Kennedy had 59 homers going into the final three games in 1956 at San Angelo. Many of those round-trippers were hit in Plainview’s Jaycee Park where it was only 348 feet to the center field fence.

A rainout in San Angelo forced a pair of 7-inning games in a double-header the next night, depriving Kennedy of at least two at-bats.

“The San Angelo catcher was calling the pitches for me, trying to help me get the 60th homer,” but Kennedy went 1-for-8 with nothing out of the park. “I was trying too hard and I finally told him, ‘Hey, you’re not helping me, you’re hurting me.’ I didn’t want to know what was coming.”

But the next night, the last of the season, Kennedy hit a long solo homer in the third off Jorge Lopez. Umpire Al Martin ruled it fair as it soared right at the foul line.

Kennedy said one of his most memorable homers came in 1953 when he hit one off Red Dial of Clovis in the 13th inning of a playoff game at Jaycee Park. Kennedy collected $290 in bills that fans stuck through the fence behind home plate.

Decades later, Kennedy had fond memories of Plainview, saying it was his favorite baseball city and had the best fans. It also was “the only town I ever played in where you were ‘sanded out’ because the sand blew so hard you couldn’t see the lights.”
